Kenji Kamiyama Directed "The Ninth Jedi" Series as One Long Film
The director tried to convey the emotions he felt when he first encountered "Star Wars".
Kenji Kamiyama spoke to Crunchyroll about his approach to creating the series "Star Wars: Visions. The Ninth Jedi". Despite the episodic format, the director perceived the project as a single feature-length work. During production, he focused on his own impressions from his first encounter with "Star Wars":
"Although it's a streaming series, and 'Star Wars' started as a film franchise, the format isn't crucial for me. I created the series as if I were working on one long film, and I tried to preserve that sense of wonder I felt when I first saw 'Star Wars'."
Kamiyama prepared for the continuation even while working on the original short film in 2021. The director had already written the backstories of Lah Kara, her father Lah Zhima, Marquis Juro, Ethan, Homen, the Jedi hunters, and other characters. Therefore, after Lucasfilm's offer to expand the story into an independent series, the team immediately began work.
However, Kamiyama did not expect such a warm reception for the first short film. The director was concerned about the reaction of "Star Wars" fans, as ideas about interesting anime can differ between Japanese and American audiences.
"Star Wars: Visions. The Ninth Jedi" will be released on August 5, 2026, on Disney+. The exact duration of the series has not yet been revealed.
