Koei Tecmo to Focus on Mid-Scale Games to Reduce Reliance on AAA Projects

Koei Tecmo shared an updated development strategy for the fiscal year ending in March 2027. During the first-quarter report, the publisher confirmed its course for a balanced release of major blockbusters and mid-scale projects, aiming to reduce its dependence on expensive AAA games.

According to the company's plans, by the end of fiscal year 2027, Koei Tecmo intends to release six major PC and console games, 19 mid-scale projects, and two proprietary online or mobile games. In addition, other unannounced projects are currently in development.

The company classifies games like Nioh and Wo Long as major releases, while mid-scale projects include new installments in the Atelier series, Nobunaga's Ambition games, remasters, and other less costly developments.

Koei Tecmo noted that after expanding its staff, the company intends to increase both the quantity and quality of games released. At the same time, management has repeatedly emphasized that it does not want to rely solely on major releases. The rising cost of development makes AAA game production increasingly risky, so the publisher plans to maintain a stable revenue stream through the regular release of mid-budget projects, remasters, and ports for Nintendo Switch 2.

Among the officially announced games, Koei Tecmo highlights Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember from Team Ninja and Attack on Titan 3 from Omega Force as its most anticipated major releases.

In addition, the company continues to work on several as-yet-undisclosed projects. One of them is a mysterious game codenamed FUJI, the development of which, as previously reported, is receiving support from the Japanese government.
