Rockstar Veteran Criticizes Grand Theft Auto VI Regional Key Locking

Players need to be careful when purchasing game activation keys.

The release of Grand Theft Auto VI is approaching, and the developers are gradually revealing release details. The game will be available not only digitally, but also on physical media. However, there's a catch – there won't be a disc with the game itself; instead, players will receive an activation code.

Recently, Rockstar Games support clarified that these Grand Theft Auto VI activation keys are not global; they will have regional restrictions. Former studio animator Mike York, a specialist who previously worked on Grand Theft Auto V, GTA Online, and Red Dead Redemption 2, reacted to the news publications about this.

In an interview with Covers, York called this announcement about regional restrictions “very disappointing.” The animator made a caveat that this is not necessarily Rockstar's fault, as it was most likely a “government decision” to prevent people from playing GTA VI abroad. He also noted that this case “shows the importance of physical discs.”

Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to be released in November of this year only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Rockstar Games / Take-Two have not yet announced a release date or release window for the PC version.
