The new release also almost tripled Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey," which grossed $17.6 million in previews. It's particularly noteworthy that "Spider-Man" achieved this result without access to IMAX theaters: premium screens are still occupied by Nolan's film.
With over $50 million, "A New Day" already ranks third in North American box office history for preview grosses. Only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with $57 million and "Avengers: Endgame" with $60 million are higher.
Thus, according to preliminary data, Destin Daniel Cretton's film has already set a record among all Sony releases. Some Deadline sources claim that "A New Day"'s gross could even surpass "Endgame"'s result. If this information is confirmed, the film will set a new absolute record, but the final figures will be known after the official statistics are published.
As for the opening weekend, analysts' forecasts differ. NRG expects at least $195 million in the US and Canada, while cinema owners and Greenlight Analytics predict a result between $260 million and $300 million. For comparison, "No Way Home" opened with $260.1 million, second only to "Avengers: Endgame" with a record $357.1 million. Global box office forecasts also vary widely — from $450 million to $800 million.
In Russia, "Spider-Man: A New Day" is expected on August 20.
