"Avengers: Endgame" Defeated: "Spider-Man: A New Day" Sets Absolute Record in Previews

The results of Peter Parker's new solo film more than quadrupled Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey."

"Spider-Man: A New Day" set an absolute record for North American box office gross from preview screenings. According to updated data, Destin Daniel Cretton's film earned $74.5 million in the US and Canada.

The previous record had been held for over seven years by "Avengers: Endgame," which grossed $60 million in previews. Thus, "A New Day" surpassed Marvel Studios' main crossover by $14.5 million, or 24%. Now, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with $57 million rounds out the top three.

The fourth solo Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland also significantly outpaced its predecessor: "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in 2021 opened with $50 million. The full top five is as follows:

"Spider-Man: A New Day" — $74.5 million;
"Avengers: Endgame" — $60 million;
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" — $57 million;
"Spider-Man: No Way Home" — $50 million;
"Deadpool & Wolverine" — $38.5 million.

"Spider-Man" achieved a historic start without IMAX theaters, which are currently occupied by Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey." Despite this, the film starring Tom Holland grossed more than four times as much: the Greek epic earned $17.6 million in previews.

Analysts now expect "A New Day" to gross between $260 million and $300 million in the US and Canada during its opening weekend. The absolute record for a three-day opening is still held by "Avengers: Endgame" with $357.1 million. Russian cinemas expect to start showing the film after August 20.
