"Not at all what you expect": First reviews of Mike Flanagan's "Carrie" have appeared
Some critics have already seen the first episodes of the modern retelling of Stephen King's "Carrie".
The first reviews of the "Carrie" series from Prime Video have appeared online. Selected journalists were shown two episodes more than two months before the premiere, and the initial reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Critics praise lead actress Summer H. Howell and the modern reinterpretation of Stephen King's novel.
Slashfilm reviewer Bill Bria admitted that the series dispelled his doubts just minutes after he started watching:
"I watched the first two episodes of 'Carrie' today, and all my doubts vanished within minutes. Mike Flanagan is working his adaptation magic again. Summer H. Howell is heartbreakingly good as Carrie. Timely, respectful, and unexpected. I can't wait for more."
Tessa Smith from Mama's Geeky shared similar impressions. According to her, viewers should not expect a familiar retelling of the story:
"I can only say one thing: wow! This is not at all what you expect. The series is absolutely incredible, and I'm dying to see the rest of the episodes. Summer H. Howell is phenomenal. This is a very timely reinterpretation of the story."
The biggest questions from fans were raised by the relocation of events to modern times. Tyler Taing from Discussing Film believes that the updated setting benefited the adaptation. In his opinion, the series explores teenage fears, social media bullying, and the recurring cycle of violence in the digital age:
"This is a significant departure from the source material and Flanagan's previous King works. He understands how dear this story is to many people, but his desire to look at modern problems through familiar characters seems very compelling to me. Even if some decisions cause controversy."
"Carrie" will be the first series adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name. Mike Flanagan served as showrunner, screenwriter, and director of the project, and the writer himself joined him as executive producer.
The cast also includes Samantha Sloyan, Siena Agudong, Amber Midthunder, Matthew Lillard, Alison Thornton, and Joel Oulette. All episodes of "Carrie" will be released on Prime Video on October 7, 2026 – there will be eight in total.
