During the Daggerheart NEXT panel at Gen Con 2026, the Critical Role team announced a new mini-campaign, Reign of the Weredragon. Chris Perkins, former creative director of Dungeons & Dragons and one of the key authors of the fifth edition of the tabletop role-playing game, will take on the role of Dungeon Master. Last year, Perkins left Wizards of the Coast and joined Darrington Press, where he has already contributed to the creation of rules for the Hope & Fear expansion.
The new project will be entirely based on Critical Role's own role-playing system — Daggerheart, developed by Darrington Press. Previously, the mini-series Age of Umbra: Sallowlands was created using this system.
The campaign's plot is a dark reinterpretation of classic fairy tales with horror elements. One of the main inspirations was "Sleeping Beauty," but participants will be able to independently influence the world's structure and collectively create the main antagonist.
In addition, Matt Mercer announced that the project will mark the team's long-awaited return to the live-stream format, which the show had moved away from in recent seasons.
The premiere of Reign of the Weredragon will take place by the end of 2026. Critical Role will announce the exact date and participants later.
