Robert Downey Jr. appeared at the Marvel panel during San Diego Comic-Con in a suit adorned with Doctor Doom's runic symbols. One Marvel fan, under the nickname Ediwithego, became so interested in the inscriptions that he decided to decipher them himself.
For the translation, he used materials from Doctor Doom's themed coffee shop in London, which opened shortly before Comic-Con. According to the decipherer, the symbols represent a phonetic cipher of the English language, created based on Latin materials and the ancient runic alphabets Elder Futhark and Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.
As a result, the fan compiled his own version of the "Latverian runic alphabet" and was able to read several phrases on the suit. The words "Revenge" and "Justice" were found on the jacket pockets. The inscription on the right lapel translates to "Tomorrow may never come," and the sleeves together form the phrase "To the victor go the spoils."
The last inscription is based on the English idiom "To the victor go the spoils," but in the context of "Avengers," it takes on additional meaning, as Doctor Doom's real name is Victor von Doom.
Fans associate these phrases with an old theory about the villain's motivation. According to it, Doctor Doom may be driven by a desire for revenge for the loss of his wife and/or child, which allegedly occurred due to changes in the multiverse after Steve Rogers traveled back in time to stay with Peggy Carter.
Such conjectures may be confirmed if the recent leak of the "Avengers: Doctor Doom" plot turns out to be true, but official details of the film are still kept secret. Fans will likely only learn the truth after the film's premiere on December 18, 2026.
