Kevin Feige spoke about the difficulties of developing the script for the film "Spider-Man: A New Day" and the search for the main antagonist for Peter Parker. According to the head of Marvel Studios, in the early stages of production, the team considered several options for a character who could become the central antagonist of the story.
Warning! Spoilers for the film "Spider-Man: A New Day" follow.
"One of the main changes during development was always the question: 'Who will be the villain?' First we had one option, then another, and then an incredibly obscure character appeared, whom no one had ever heard of. It just wasn't satisfying."
According to Feige, Tom Holland suggested using another hero, but Marvel was unable to obtain the rights for his appearance. The team continued to search for a character whose confrontation would help complete Peter's personal story after the events of "No Way Home."
Ultimately, the creators' attention was drawn to Jean Grey. Feige explained that the heroine became a kind of reflection of Peter Parker: she possesses enormous power, but has no one who could help her cope with her own abilities.
"She's a young girl about the same age as Peter, maybe a little younger. In every Spider-Man movie, Peter had a mentor. Here, he meets someone with abilities similar to his own, but she didn't have an Aunt May or anyone at all who could help or guide her."
The creators were also interested in Jean's early history — before meeting Professor Xavier and joining the X-Men. Her uncontrollable abilities allowed them to connect the character with Peter's theme of loneliness after the events of "No Way Home."
The idea finally took shape after the suggestion to invite Sadie Sink. According to Feige, the team immediately understood who the actress should play: "Okay, that's Jean Grey. Let's take her."
Marvel has not yet confirmed Sink's further appearances in the Cinematic Universe. It is assumed that Jean Grey will become part of the new X-Men team, but the actress's participation in the upcoming franchise reboot or "Avengers: Secret Wars" has not been officially announced.
