Sony Pictures Freezes Spider-Man Villain Spin-Offs - Studio Head Reveals Canceled Projects
After several setbacks, the studio decided to reconsider plans for its Marvel characters.
Sony Pictures has effectively put on hold the development of its own line of films about characters from the Spider-Man comics. Company head Tom Rothman admitted that solo projects like “Morbius,” “Madame Web,” and “Kraven the Hunter” failed to win over audiences:
“Ultimately, the audience was not satisfied enough with them. Whether such an assessment of these films is fair — who knows. It’s pointless to argue with that. The audience is paramount here, and they didn’t respond. It’s that simple.”
Currently, Sony has no active projects in development about Spider-Man’s adversaries or allies. Previously announced films such as “El Muerto,” “Sinister Six,” “Agent Venom,” and a Silver Sable film are not officially in production. Rothman emphasized that the company never viewed these releases as part of a unified cinematic universe, but merely sought interesting stories for individual characters.
“We never called it the 'Sony Marvel Universe.' We considered the possibility of making decent films about other characters. At the moment, no such project is in active development.”
Thus, Sony is no longer pursuing potential spin-offs about characters surrounding Spider-Man, which were previously reported. Meanwhile, the main film series about Peter Parker continues to develop separately and is created in collaboration with Marvel Studios. After the success of “Spider-Man: A New Day,” the company has already expressed interest in a fifth film with Tom Holland, although the project has not yet received an official “green light.”
