"The Worst May Still Be Ahead": George R.R. Martin Opens Up About Battling Depression
The writer personally addressed his blog readers for the first time since February.
George R.R. Martin spoke about a difficult period in his life and admitted that the past few months have not been easy for him. The author of "A Song of Ice and Fire" noted that even the help of his assistant team could not cope with all the accumulated tasks, and some events proved emotionally challenging for him.
"This year has been… stressful, to say the least. So much has been happening — it was overwhelming. There were good events, and exciting ones. Dreams came true. But there were also nightmares. I lost friends. I struggled with sadness and depression. The worst may still be ahead."
On September 20, 2026, the writer will turn 78. Martin admitted that aging has been a challenging experience for him, although the past year also brought many happy events.
"Last September I turned seventy-seven, and I tell you: getting old is no fun at all. But there were also amazing moments. I suppose that's life. Of course, I knew that. If you've read my stories, you know it too."
Martin promised to gradually talk about the accumulated events but warned that subsequent posts would likely be short and written in a hurry. His team of assistants will continue to help him manage the blog.
One of the main reasons for joy was the nine Emmy nominations for the series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," including the "Outstanding Drama Series" category. Martin hopes to attend the ceremony on September 14, although the final decision depends on many circumstances.
However, Martin admitted that he had expected to see the lead actors — Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell — among the nominees.
"I am proud of our team and hope we bring home some statues. But I confess: I had hoped we would get some acting nominations as well. However, there's always next year."
Thus, Dunk and Egg have not yet received personal nominations, but the series' actors will still have the opportunity to compete for awards after the second season's release in 2027.
