Disney Admits "Moana" and "The Mandalorian & Grogu" Underperformed at the Box Office

The company believes that weak box office results were partially offset by merchandise sales and a future release on Disney+.

Disney has admitted that the live-action "Moana" and the film "The Mandalorian & Grogu" underperformed at the box office. The company disclosed the films' results in a fresh financial report, noting their box office figures.

The live-action "Moana" grossed $263 million against a production budget of approximately $250 million. Including marketing and distribution costs, the film failed to break even in theaters.

"The Mandalorian & Grogu" concluded its worldwide theatrical run with $345 million against a budget of $165 million. The film performed better than "Moana" but became the lowest-grossing live-action film in the "Star Wars" universe, even falling short of "Solo: A Star Wars Story."

However, Disney believes that evaluating project results solely by box office performance is incorrect. The company noted that both premieres helped strengthen the franchises beyond cinemas.

According to the company, "The Mandalorian & Grogu" contributed to the growth of "Star Wars" merchandise sales during the quarter. The live-action "Moana," in turn, is expected to strengthen the franchise's presence on Disney+, where the original animated film remains one of the platform's most popular titles.

The company also separately noted the more successful results of "Toy Story 5," whose worldwide gross exceeded $1 billion.
