"Absolute Triumph": First Reviews Emerge for the Anime "Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi"
The anime from Production I.G is recommended for anyone tired of the Skywalker saga.
Today, the anime series "Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi" premiered on Disney+. The project became the first full-fledged series within the new line of standalone stories, grown out of the anthology "Star Wars: Visions." Critics have already watched all eight episodes and mostly warmly received the continuation of Kara's story.
As of publication, the series' rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 100% after 7 reviews. On Metacritic, the anime received 83 points after 4 reviews. These figures may still change as new reviews are published, but the initial reviews already allow for an assessment of the project's strengths.
Collider called "The Ninth Jedi" one of the franchise's best stories and particularly praised Production I.G's hand-drawn animation, as well as the creative freedom of the creators. The reviewer noted that the series' own ideas sound stronger than a simple reproduction of familiar "Star Wars" elements:
"The visuals of 'The Ninth Jedi,' unsurprisingly, look phenomenal. The series wisely uses 'Star Wars' elements as an addition, not a crutch. There are lightsabers, starships, and parallels to the Skywalker films, but the main focus is on new heroes and concepts."
ScreenRant called the project an "absolute triumph" and specifically praised the battle choreography. Reviewers noted that the series uses the capabilities of anime for spectacular fights, while maintaining a sense of weight and danger:
"Anime lends itself to more spectacular and exaggerated staging, especially in combat choreography, but the duels between Jedi, the last Sith, General Navaam, and Kara's abducted father feel grounded and weighty."
IGN was more reserved in its assessment. The publication noted a rocky start and a large number of familiar plot elements, but praised how the story gradually moves away from the franchise's usual motifs:
"The Ninth Jedi" is definitely worth watching for anyone who wants a break from the Skywalker saga. Initially, the series struggles a bit, but the further the story develops, the more it separates itself from previous projects and addresses the franchise's most interesting concepts."
Polygon highlighted a more mature approach to the young heroine's story and the combination of emotional drama with spectacular action. However, the publication noted that not all characters received equally deep development:
"The Ninth Jedi" reminds us that a story can be about young heroes without becoming an infantile work. The action is impressive, but the creators understand that sometimes less is more."
All eight episodes of "Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi" are now available on Disney+. Production was handled by Studio Production I.G, Kenji Kamiyama served as chief director, and Shunsuke Tada was responsible for the staging.
