Ex-Bethesda developer explains why Fallout 3 remaster could be "the one" version of the game
This summer, Bethesda Game Studios announced several projects for the Fallout franchise. For example, it was announced that remasters of Fallout: New Vegas, as well as Fallout 3, are in the works.
Recently, former Bethesda developer Nathan Purkeypile, who worked at the studio for over 10 years, spoke with The Examined Game YouTube channel and shared his thoughts on the Fallout 3 remaster.
The developer reminded that the original game was created at a time when the project's authors faced a number of technical limitations. As a result, compromises had to be made to bring the project to release:
It's now confirmed that [Bethesda] is developing a Fallout 3 remaster, and personally, I'm really looking forward to it, because when we were developing Fallout 3, we were severely limited in terms of technology: you could only place a certain number of light sources, and the textures were quite small. We constantly had to think about the memory budget and how much you were displaying on the screen.
For this reason, Nathan Purkeypile explains, the resulting Fallout 3 doesn't quite look the way the developers originally intended:
I understand why people get more upset about movie remakes and all that, but with games, especially in terms of the art, it's 100% not what we wanted to do, and back then everything was very, very strictly limited.
The developer noted that he wouldn't mind working on a remake or remaster of Skyrim — he would add more colors to the game.
Bethesda Game Studios has not yet announced a release date or window for the Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3 remasters. The developers have not disclosed details of the projects.
