Sony has started distributing a new version of the system software for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro to participants in its beta testing program. One of the main changes in the update will be the automatic activation of the Enhance PSSR Image Quality feature, which improves image quality in games that use the first version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology.
PSSR is a key feature of the PS5 Pro and is a proprietary AI-based image upscaling system. The first version of the technology received mixed reviews: in some projects, including the Silent Hill 2 remake on Unreal Engine 5, users noted problems with lighting processing and the quality of the final image. Subsequently, Sony introduced an improved version, PSSR 2.0, which provides higher image quality.
Despite this, many games still use the first version of PSSR. For such projects, Sony previously added a separate setting, Enhance PSSR Image Quality, which allows applying advanced processing algorithms. It is reported that after installing the new beta firmware, this option will be enabled automatically.
The letter received by testing participants states that activating the feature will allow applying improved PSSR quality in games that support the previous version of the technology, providing a clearer and more detailed image.
In addition, the update contains traditional system performance and stability improvements, as well as minor changes related to the Bluetooth disable function in certain regions.
