Warner Bros. Discovery management does not plan to revise DC Studios' strategy after the box office failure of "Supergirl." During a quarterly call with investors, CEO David Zaslav was asked about the future of the cinematic universe, but he did not focus on the film's failure and instead concentrated on upcoming projects.
Zaslav stated that he is pleased with the upcoming DC lineup and the work of studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran:
"We have 'Clayface' coming out soon, and it looks great. 'Lanterns' is launching on HBO in the next few weeks, and Casey [Bloys] and Sarah [Aubrey] are very happy with it. So everything looks very good at DC, we have an extensive lineup of projects, and Peter and James are working hard."
"Supergirl" was the second feature film in the revamped DC cinematic universe after "Superman." Craig Gillespie's film received mixed reviews and earned only $126 million against a production budget of over $170 million.
At the same time, the entire past quarter was significantly weaker for Warner Bros. Discovery's studio division compared to the previous year. Its revenue decreased by 39% – from $3.8 billion to $2.33 billion. In three months, the division, which produces films, series, and games, brought in almost $1.5 billion less for the company than a year earlier, and adjusted profit fell by approximately nine times – from $863 million to $96 million.
