Sapphire vs. Velvet: Pre-release Trailer for "A Hero with a Ribbon" Released
A modern reinterpretation of Osamu Tezuka's "Princess Knight" will be available on Netflix on August 8.
Twin Engine unveiled the pre-release trailer for the anime film "A Hero with a Ribbon" a day before its premiere. The video focuses on the confrontation between Princess Sapphire and Velvet against the backdrop of the return of a calamity that previously destroyed the girl's kingdom.
"A Hero with a Ribbon" reinterprets Osamu Tezuka's manga "Princess Knight" for a modern audience. The original work told the story of Sapphire, who was forced to hide her gender and pretend to be a prince to inherit the throne. The new version retained the image of a girl with a sword and a scarlet ribbon but placed the heroine in an independent story:
"Sapphire is the princess of a kingdom that no longer exists. Having lost everything in her homeland, Silverland, due to a calamity named Nergal, she wanders in despair and eventually finds herself in Goldland. Although the past continues to weigh on her, the kindness of the local people gives the girl hope. But Nergal reappears. The despair that once turned her homeland to ashes now threatens to deprive this land of light as well. 'I will lose nothing more and allow no one else to lose anything.' Wiping away her tears, the girl takes up her sword."
The main character is voiced by comedian Saaya, and Velvet is voiced by Koki Uchiyama, known for his roles as Shigaraki in "My Hero Academia" and Meruem in Hunter × Hunter. The cast also includes Seiran Kobayashi, Mayumi Shintani, Yoshimasa Hosoya, and Nijisanji members Mito Tsukino, Runrun, and Debidebi Debiru.
The director is Yuki Igarashi, who worked on "Jujutsu Kaisen" and the anthology "Star Wars: Visions." Twin Engine is producing, and Outline studio is creating the animation. The film will be the franchise's first animated project since the 1999 short film.
"A Hero with a Ribbon" will premiere on August 8, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
