Not Just Pennywise: "It: Welcome to Derry" Sequel Will Show the Real Horrors of the Great Depression
The new season will show a city ravaged by unemployment, poverty, and crime.
The creators of the series "It: Welcome to Derry" have begun developing the story for the second season. In an interview with Variety, director and co-creator Andy Muschietti confirmed that the writers have already gathered to prepare for the sequel.
The new story will unfold in 1935 – 27 years before the events of the first season. The focus of the plot will be the Bradley Gang massacre, mentioned in Stephen King's novel. A group of criminals hides in Derry from the FBI, and then encounters another manifestation of ancient evil.
According to Muschietti, the social and cultural upheavals of the 1930s will be the "center and heart" of the story. The creators intend to explore the horrors of the Great Depression era itself alongside the supernatural threat emanating from Pennywise. Many characters will be unemployed, homeless, or orphaned children who will have to go to extreme measures to survive:
"On the surface, Derry has almost turned into a graveyard, into the remains of something former. People are devastated, poor, exhausted, deprived of work and home. Children no longer have a cozy suburban life."
However, HBO has not yet officially renewed "It: Welcome to Derry" for a second season. The start dates for filming and the premiere of the sequel are unknown.
