Neon Crime Hell: Takashi Miike's "Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo" Gets First Trailer

The Japanese film will be the third standalone story in the series, following films with Harvey Keitel and Nicolas Cage.

Neon has unveiled the first teaser trailer for "Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo" from Takashi Miike, director of "13 Assassins," "Blade of the Immortal," and "Onimusha." The clip plunges viewers into the neon-drenched criminal underworld of the Japanese capital and showcases brutal clashes.

The main character is Kyoji Yabuki, played by Shun Oguri – a corrupt Tokyo police officer with a gambling addiction. The detective finds himself embroiled in a complex investigation alongside the mysterious FBI agent Nguyen, played by Lily James. They must track down the missing daughter of an influential American politician, while an assassin connected to the yakuza underworld hunts them.

The cast also includes wrestler Liv Morgan, Shotaro Mamiya, Nanase Nishino, Jun Kunimura, and Hiroshi Tachi. The screenplay was written by Daisuke Tengan, who previously worked with Miike on "Audition" and "13 Assassins."

"Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo" continues the series of standalone crime stories about corrupt police officers. It began with Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant" starring Harvey Keitel, released in 1992. In 2009, Werner Herzog presented his own interpretation – "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" starring Nicolas Cage.

The world premiere of "Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo" will take place in September 2026 at the Toronto International Film Festival. After that, the film is planned for theatrical release, but the exact date has not yet been announced.
