Gareth Edwards Will Not Direct the Sequel to "Jurassic World: Rebirth" - Media

The director parted ways with Universal Pictures over differing views on the franchise's future development.

Gareth Edwards will not direct the sequel to "Jurassic World: Rebirth." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director left the project due to creative differences with Universal Pictures management. Details of the conflict have not been disclosed. Studio representatives limited themselves to a brief statement, positively assessing their previous collaboration with the director:

Edwards is already the second director to leave the new cycle due to disagreements with the studio. Initially, "Rebirth" was to be directed by David Leitch, but he dropped out of the project before filming began, after which Universal invited Edwards. Despite mixed reviews, "Jurassic World: Rebirth" became one of the biggest box office hits of 2025, earning $869 million.

The script for the eighth installment of the franchise is once again being written by David Koepp, who worked on the original "Jurassic Park" and "Rebirth." Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are expected to return to their roles, but the actors' schedules are still being coordinated. The plot of the sequel is also being kept under wraps for now.

Filming for the sequel is planned to begin in 2027, but it is not yet known whether the search for a new director will affect the production schedule. The film also does not yet have an official title or premiere date.
