Lauren Cohan assessed the prospects for the fourth season of the series "The Walking Dead: Dead City". The actress, who plays Maggie, along with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, also serves as an executive producer of the series, so both are directly involved in discussing its further development. The actress believes that after 15 years of working on the franchise, the creators are still able to surprise viewers:
"We have a lot of out-of-the-box ideas for another season. If they can surprise Jeff and me, they'll surprise the fans. When you've been working on a show for 15 years, it feels like, 'We've done everything already.' But no, we haven't."
"Dead City" allowed for a deeper exploration of Maggie and showed new facets of her relationship with Negan. According to Cohan, the further development of familiar characters opens up additional opportunities for screenwriters:
"When you start to get to know characters from a different side, or they allow themselves to show a previously hidden part of their personality, suddenly a whole world of new possibilities opens up. As long as there are good scripts and the characters are able to change, these possibilities are truly limitless."
A decision on the future of "Dead City" will likely be made after the current season concludes. If the series is renewed, it could remain the only ongoing "The Walking Dead" spin-off after "Daryl Dixon" concludes its fourth season in 2027.
Currently, new episodes are receiving mixed, though few, reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the third season earned 78% positive reviews from critics and 51% from viewers. For comparison, the second season had 56% and 42% respectively, and the first had 100% and 51%.
However, the sample size on the aggregator is too small for definitive conclusions: each season was rated by only about six professional reviewers and a few dozen users. On Metacritic, the ratings for the second and third seasons are not yet formed for the same reason. The average rating for the third season's episodes on IMDb is approximately 7.5 points, compared to 7.6 for the first and 7.1 for the second. At least these indicators do not suggest a decline in the series' reception compared to previous seasons, but only two out of eight episodes have been released so far.
