The success of "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" helped Nintendo sharply increase revenue from the use of its intellectual property. According to the financial report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, which ended on June 30, the mobile and licensing segment brought the company 34.8 billion yen – about $220 million. Compared to the same period last year, the figure increased by 107.4%.
"Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" grossed over $1.012 billion worldwide and became the second highest-grossing video game adaptation in history. The previous installment retains the first place with $1.36 billion. Together, the two animated films earned about $2.37 billion.
In its report, Nintendo notes that films help introduce new audiences to the company's characters. This strategy plays a particularly important role in regions where Nintendo's gaming platforms have not gained widespread adoption:
"We believe that our film and video content projects can go beyond the specialized business of game platforms and give people around the world the opportunity to get acquainted with Nintendo characters."
Earlier, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that Nintendo is considering adaptations of other franchises besides Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Insiders also reported a plan estimated to last about ten years, which allegedly includes projects for Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and Kirby, as well as spin-offs about Luigi and Yoshi. These films have not yet been officially presented.
Nintendo's next confirmed adaptation will be The Legend of Zelda. Its premiere is scheduled for April 30, 2027.
