Warner Bros. Discovery has included the Game of Thrones prequel film, tentatively titled “Aegon's Conquest,” in its theatrical slate for “2027 and beyond.” This means the film will not be released before 2027, although the studio has not yet announced an exact premiere date.
“Aegon's Conquest” will be the first feature film in the Game of Thrones universe. The plot will unfold approximately 300 years before the events of the original series and will tell the story of Aegon I Targaryen's conquest of Westeros. Along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, the future king used three dragons — Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes — to subjugate most of the continent. Aegon conquered six kingdoms, founded the Targaryen dynasty, and created the Iron Throne from the weapons of his enemies.
The screenplay for the film is being written by Beau Willimon, creator of the American “House of Cards” and one of the writers of “Andor.” According to media reports, he had already submitted the first draft of the script by March 2026. The director and cast have not yet been announced.
Previously, Mattson Tomlin, screenwriter for “The Batman – Part II,” worked on a television version of “Aegon's Conquest.” He was preparing a series pitch for HBO and consulting with George R.R. Martin. In February 2026, Tomlin showed project materials while HBO was choosing between two formats.
In April 2026, it became known that the studio decided to develop the story as a feature film. Judging by the chronology of events, the decision could have followed after receiving drafts from Willimon and Tomlin, but Warner Bros. and HBO did not disclose how connected the screenwriters' versions were and whether Tomlin continues to participate in the project.
