21 years later, GTA: San Andreas fans can hear new lines - modder restored mechanics and content
This summer, an updated "SilentPatch" was released for the PC versions of the 3D Grand Theft Auto trilogy games. This fan patch not only fixes numerous technical issues but also restores the functionality of some mechanics and brings back content.
The SilentPatch developer said that this update "fixes hundreds of lines" of character dialogue. He clarified that he did not restore all phrases:
In this SilentPatch release, I built upon Kaizo M's research and used his tools to identify even more audio issues, and fixed as many of them as I could. Not all unused dialogues have been restored, as some did not find a suitable place in the final version of the game – but everything that, in my opinion, was missed and not intentionally cut, has been restored; with this update [SilentPatch] you will definitely notice a greater variety of lines used almost everywhere in the game.
The modder reviewed the update using GTA: San Andreas as an example. Pedestrians can now start a conversation about the weather, and CJ can respond to these lines. Players will also be able to hear various lines from fleeing criminals.
Gang members also received additional lines, for example, hostile NPCs can ask the protagonist about their gang affiliation.
Vendors also received lines: they will trigger when CJ aims a weapon at them. The modder noted that the weapon dealer had over 15 lines – all of which were previously unused.
In GTA: San Andreas, you now get a $50 "Good Citizen" bonus for helping to catch a criminal being chased by a police officer.
