Discs are becoming a thing of the past. Square Enix reveals sales statistics

Square Enix reported a 32.3% increase in net sales and an 88.6% increase in operating income in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, with digital versions accounting for 90.1% of all games sold.

Square Enix reported its results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026. Net sales grew by 32.3%, and operating income by 88.6% year-over-year. One of the main drivers was Final Fantasy VII Rebirth after its release on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S.

The release of The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales also positively impacted the results. The game showed satisfactory performance on PS5, Switch 2, PC, and Xbox.

However, the sales data was the most telling. 90.1% of all Square Enix games sold were digital versions – approximately 6.65 million copies. Only 9.9%, or about 730,000 copies, were physical editions.

Capcom previously showed a similar trend. Nintendo remains an exception, where players still more often buy physical versions.
