The fate of "Mortal Kombat 3" is in question after the sequel's weak box office performance

The script for the third installment was ready back in March, but Warner Bros. is not yet rushing to greenlight the continuation.

Simon McQuoid, the director of the last two Mortal Kombat adaptations, said that the fate of the third film is still uncertain. Warner Bros. has not yet officially approved the sequel:

The current situation is reminiscent of the first installment's fate. The 2021 "Mortal Kombat" grossed about $84 million on a budget of $55 million, but became a big streaming hit. As McQuoid said, the film's success on home platforms contributed to the creation of the sequel and convinced Warner Bros. to allocate a larger budget for it.

Now, the second part may follow a similar path. Despite weak box office receipts of $129.5 million against a production budget of $80 million, the film is doing well on streaming services. On July 24, "Mortal Kombat 2" was released on HBO Max and topped the platform's global rankings, taking first place in 56 countries.

If a positive decision is made, production of the third part could be launched in the shortest possible time. Screenwriter Jeremy Slater began working on "Mortal Kombat 3" in the fall of 2025 and completed the script in March 2026.
