Kenji Kamiyama devised 150 years of shared history for the anime Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and the game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT
Kenji Kamiyama leads the multimedia RG Project, which unites the anime Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and the game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT. In an interview with Variety, the director revealed that the work began with the game, but its creators did not yet have a ready-made setting:
"Actually, the project started with the game, but the game team didn't have a specific setting yet. So I started creating the world by asking what the 'Gundam' was fighting against."
Kamiyama thought through the origin of the monsters, the reasons for Earth's fall, and the development of technologies that allowed humanity to create mobile suits to combat the new threat.
"Working out such details is probably the most difficult and at the same time the most exciting part of creating science fiction."
As a result, the universe's history spanned at least 150 years. Its chronology begins 50 years before the events of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and extends to the time of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, which takes place about a century later:
"At the very least, it extends from events 50 years before the start of this story to another possible future that can connect with the game world 100 years later."
Writer Toh EnJoe helped Kamiyama with the science fiction foundation. He evaluated ideas of gravity control, superluminal communication, and cognitive materialization, which formed the basis of the setting, and determined which of them seemed convincing and which required further development.
"He is a master who rearranges words with mathematics, so the question of whether to analyze the meaning became a source of creative inspiration."
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT will be released in 2027.
