PS5 special edition for Marvel's Wolverine without a disc drive once again reminded players of Sony's plans to abandon physical games

Sony Interactive Entertainment unveiled a special edition of the PlayStation 5 dedicated to Marvel's Wolverine. However, instead of excitement, some players noticed another detail: the limited console will only be available in a digital version, without a built-in disc drive.

The bundle includes a PS5 with Wolverine-themed design, a DualSense controller with a unique design, and a code to download the game. However, a physical edition of the console is not provided.

For owners of existing consoles, Sony has also prepared Wolverine-style interchangeable faceplates. However, there are limitations here too: full faceplates for PS5 models with a disc drive are not released separately – users will need to additionally purchase a special cover for the disc drive.

Design options for the PS5 Pro in adamantium style and the standard PS5 Slim were also presented. However, the accessories are not intended for some older PS5 models with a built-in disc drive.

Many players perceived the appearance of the digital version of Wolverine PS5 as further confirmation that Sony does not intend to change its course regarding physical media.

It was previously announced that the company plans to stop releasing physical copies of games for PlayStation in the future. Despite the dissatisfaction of some of the audience, disc production is gradually decreasing, and some related capacities have already begun to reorient to other tasks.

Users note that even before the official end of support for physical releases, there is still time, but new accessories are already being created primarily with digital console models in mind.
