Developers at Insomniac Games have confirmed an important technical feature of Marvel's Wolverine: the game will run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled in performance mode on a standard PlayStation 5.
Jess Reyner-Reed, Senior Project Director, revealed this in an interview with IGN. According to her, the team focused on stable 60 fps on the base PS5 from the very beginning of development.
From the very beginning of development, we knew we wanted to make a 60 fps game, working with the base PS5 in performance mode. And we definitely managed to achieve that. The game feels very smooth.
Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac, noted that the team was confident in their abilities and decided to make 60 fps with ray tracing the standard game mode.
We always created quality and performance modes, and then at the last minute added a performance mode with ray tracing and thought: “But this is pretty good…”. In this game, we said from the very beginning: we are confident that we can release it exactly like this.
According to Fitzgerald, this mode is especially important for Marvel's Wolverine in terms of visual presentation. At the same time, the developers paid great attention not only to lighting but also to the surrounding world.
Unlike the predominantly urban locations of the Marvel's Spider-Man series, the new game takes the player outside of megacities much more often. In particular, Wolverine will explore the wilderness of Canada and Madripoor. Therefore, Insomniac has significantly expanded the technologies responsible for vegetation and the environment's interaction with wind.
The developers promise that vegetation will actively react to character actions, wind, and what is happening around. In addition, most objects in the environment can be destroyed.
Fitzgerald explained that this should make the consequences of battles more convincing. After a large-scale fight, the player should not leave a completely untouched location: market stalls, tables, and other objects will be destroyed and physically react to attacks.
Marvel's Wolverine will be released on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PS5. The game will tell an original story of Logan, who is trying to understand his past and find his place in the world. Jean Grey, Sabretooth, and Mystique will appear in the story, but at the time of the game's events, the X-Men do not yet exist.
