"Victory for DCU": First reviews for DC Studios' "Lanterns" series appear
The superhero "True Detective" managed to surprise some critics.
The first reviews for the DC Studios and HBO series "Lanterns" have been predominantly positive. As of publication, the project's rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 89% after 36 reviews. On Metacritic, the series received 72 out of 100 points based on 26 reviews.
Reviewers praise the combination of superheroics with a dark detective story in the vein of "True Detective" and specifically note the chemistry between lead actors Aaron Pierre (John Stewart) and Kyle Chandler (Hal Jordan).
Ben Travers from IndieWire believes that the series falls short of its inspirations in some aspects but successfully combines their strengths:
"While it lacks the abundance of ideas of Lindelof's best works and the visual splendor of 'True Detective's' most memorable scenes, 'Lanterns' is a compelling fusion of its inspirations' strengths."
Felipe Rangel from Screen Rant considers "Lanterns" a worthy standalone Green Lantern project:
"Overall, 'Lanterns' is the solo Green Lantern project DC fans deserve: with thrilling action, complex characters, and a dark, compelling story."
Daniel Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter particularly highlighted the chemistry between Chandler and Pierre, as well as the strong ensemble cast. However, the critic noted that the series occasionally lacks spectacle:
"'Lanterns' has plenty of virtues — most notably the prickly chemistry between Pierre and Kyle Chandler, a top-notch ensemble cast led by Kelly Macdonald, Poorna Jagannathan and Garret Dillahunt, and enough intriguing ideas to compensate for the occasional lack of spectacle."
The lowest score among the reviews presented on Metacritic — 25 out of 100 points — was given by the San Francisco Chronicle. Zaki Hasan criticized the slow pace of the investigation, the lack of scope, and the modest use of Green Lantern's abilities:
"The central mystery takes too long to gain momentum and address the interstellar possibilities of this mythology. For a story about a weapon capable of manifesting anything its wielder can imagine, 'Lanterns' seems strangely limited in its understanding of what Green Lantern can be."
The plot follows experienced Hal Jordan as he undertakes to train new Green Lantern John Stewart. The two intergalactic police officers become embroiled in a murder investigation in rural America, which gradually leads them to a larger threat.
The first of eight episodes of "Lanterns" will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 17, 2026.
