Sleeping Dogs Awakens - Simu Liu Reveals Progress on Film Adaptation
The creators are already in talks with Square Enix.
Marvel star Simu Liu shared an update on the progress of the Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. According to the actor, the team has already found a director and a production company, and is currently in negotiations with Square Enix:
“Okay, here’s the scoop. We’re making great progress: we have a director, a production company, and a REAL plan of action. We are currently in talks with the studio that released the game (for me, this is a truly fan moment, as I adore Square Enix). Your support energizes all of us!”
The film adaptation will be directed by Timo Tjahjanto, known for "Nobody 2," "The Night Comes for Us," and "May the Devil Take You." The director previously mentioned that he himself was inspired by Sleeping Dogs when working on his action films. Simu Liu will play police officer Wei Shen and will also serve as a producer for the film. The draft script was written by D.J. Cotrona, and Story Kitchen, specializing in video game adaptations, has joined the production.
The first attempt to adapt Sleeping Dogs for the screen was made back in 2017. At that time, Donnie Yen was set to play Wei Shen, but after several years of unsuccessful development, the actor confirmed that the film was canceled — then Simu Liu took over, determined to bring the project to release.
