The Bold Bogey Creator Called Steam "Frightening" Due to the Sheer Number of Releases

News

Recently, developer MmmDoggy participated in the podcast "" and talked about his game The Bold Bogey, as well as the difficulties he faces.

Steam is an open platform, and the barrier to entry is minimal — you just need to pay the "Steam Direct fee" of $100 (or regional equivalent) to register your game that creators want to distribute in the store.

MmmDoggy explained that he doesn't yet have the opportunity to release The Bold Bogey on other platforms, and Steam is the most accessible option for him:

Steam is the most open platform, and it has the most users. So it's the easiest to get on: you just need to pay about $100 to get listed there. Obviously, most developers start with Steam. If I had the opportunity, I would gladly release on other consoles as well. The problem is that usually, you either need a publisher or you need to pay thousands of dollars for a devkit [console for developers], plus each platform has its own rules and requirements. So [console release] and all that — that might happen much later, if this game ever becomes successful at all.

MmmDoggy considers Steam incredibly useful on one hand, and "frightening" on the other, because a huge number of games are released there, and it's difficult for developers to stand out among them:

[…] thousands of games are released there every year, and it's very difficult to stand out. So you have to constantly do marketing: look for different ways to attract attention, write posts on Reddit, do advertising, trailers, and all that. I work alone, so I have to combine all this with the actual development of the game itself. This has certainly been a valuable experience, and I feel like I've learned so much about this system that I'm much more confident navigating it now.
