IMAX head Rich Gelfond shared his impressions of "Star Wars: Starfighter" on The Town podcast with Matt Belloni. He visited the film's set and compared it to the classic installments of the franchise starring Harrison Ford:
"I was on the set of 'Star Wars: Starfighter.' It's a return to the 'Star Wars' associated with Harrison Ford."
The comparison to classic "Star Wars" seems natural: judging by the material already shown, Cade Oberon, played by Gosling, resembles Han Solo – the same space adventurer who constantly finds himself in the midst of dangerous adventures.
During the conversation, Matt Belloni also recalled the weak box office performance of "The Mandalorian & Grogu" and doubted that audiences are ready to flock to cinemas again for "Star Wars." Gelfond, however, is confident in the new film's prospects:
"I'm taking a risk making this prediction, but mark my words: I think the film will be good."
Alongside Ryan Gosling, the film stars Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamil Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Shawn Levy directed, and Jonathan Tropper wrote the screenplay.
"Star Wars: Starfighter" is set to premiere on May 28, 2027.
