John Carpenter has once again hinted that a sequel to the sci-fi horror film "The Thing" is in development. During an appearance at Fan Expo Chicago, the director was asked about the fate of a potential sequel, and he replied: "We're working on it right now."
However, when a fan asked for details, Carpenter immediately tempered expectations: "Yeah, I don't know. We'll see."
This is not the first time Carpenter has spoken about a possible sequel. In October 2025, the director also claimed that work on the project was underway, and in 2023, he admitted that he was bound by a non-disclosure agreement and allowed for the possibility of a new film. However, over the years, none of these statements have led to an official announcement.
At the same time, Carpenter himself has an idea about the fate of the original characters. The director believes that MacReady and Childs survived the ambiguous ending of "The Thing" in 1982. Whether a potential sequel will return to these characters is still unknown.
