Paramount+ is discussing with several writers what the next series in the "Star Trek" universe will be. Jane Wiseman, head of original content for the streaming service, told Deadline that the company, along with CBS Studios, is already looking for a new direction for the franchise:
"Our goal and our job is to figure out what the next iteration of 'Star Trek' is going to be. We're talking to a lot of writers and leaning into CBS Studios. We need to figure out what the next chapter of the franchise is going to be because it's too important."
None of the potential projects have yet been approved for production. Paramount+ has yet to decide on the era, setting, characters, and creative team for the next series, so it's too early to talk about its release date.
The search for a new direction began amidst the impending conclusion of two current series. "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" will end after a shortened fifth season of six episodes, and "Starfleet Academy" will be canceled after its second season. After their finales, Paramount+ will have no announced "Star Trek" series left.
In parallel, Paramount Pictures is developing a feature-length "Star Trek" film with new characters. The film will be handled by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, creators of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." They will serve as screenwriters, directors, and producers of the picture. This project is developing separately from Paramount+'s plans for the next series.
