The song Duvet by the British band bôa has become the first anime opening to surpass one billion streams on Spotify, and simultaneously the most streamed track in this category. As of August 18, the song from "Serial Experiments Lain" has been played over 1.114 billion times, and it continues to accumulate approximately 837 thousand streams daily.

Spotify does not maintain a separate official anime opening chart, but in Anison 100, which compiles open service statistics, Duvet holds the top spot by a significant margin. Its closest competitors are Idol by the duo Yoasobi from "Oshi no Ko" with 616 million streams and Kick Back by Kenshi Yonezu from "Chainsaw Man" with 579 million.

Duvet appeared in 1998 on bôa's debut album The Race of a Thousand Camels, and in the same year, it became the opening theme for "Serial Experiments Lain." The anime consists of 13 episodes and tells the story of schoolgirl Lain Iwakura, who delves into a virtual network and gradually loses the ability to distinguish between the digital and real worlds.

A new wave of popularity for Duvet began in 2021, and by 2023, the song was already garnering about 7 million streams per week and was used in over 250 thousand videos. This increased interest helped bôa reunite after a long hiatus and return to recording new music.

The "Serial Experiments Lain" itself is also experiencing a renaissance. Currently, an OVA titled lain: Protocol 7 and an accompanying visual novel are being created based on the anime, which will transfer the original themes into the era of digital twins and generative AI. The project has already raised over 10 million yen through crowdfunding, and the digital version of the OVA is planned to be delivered to sponsors in April 2027.
