Parted Amicably: Compulsion Games Finally Separates from Xbox and Regains Rights to Its Games

News 0

Compulsion Games has become fully independent from Xbox. The developers completed a management buyout of the company, resulting in control of the studio transferring to its leadership. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Compulsion Games first announced its departure from Xbox in July 2026. Now, studio CEO Guillaume Provost confirmed in an interview with GamesBeat that the deal is complete, and Compulsion has regained the rights to its own intellectual property, including South of Midnight, We Happy Few, and Contrast.

According to Provost, every copy of a game developed by Compulsion Games sold now goes to support the studio itself and its team.

Compulsion Games was one of the studios affected by Xbox's July restructuring. The cuts resulted in approximately 1600 job losses, with an equal number of layoffs expected by the end of the year.
