Work on the sequel began even before the series premiere.

“Lanterns” has just premiered on HBO, and its creators are already working on a second season. Showrunner Chris Mundy confirmed that he and screenwriter Christopher Cantwell have been working on the sequel for about six weeks, even though the series has not yet received an official renewal:

“We’ve been building the season for about six weeks now and we’re going to talk to the executives very soon.”

For now, the creators are developing the overall story and have not yet started writing individual episodes. According to Mundy, the team is acting with confidence that the sequel will happen:

“You have to move forward with complete confidence, as if everything will definitely happen. If it doesn’t, you can’t allow yourself to be broken.”

In a potential second season, the creators want to change their approach to storytelling, keeping familiar characters, but are not yet ready to share details.

HBO recently worked on the second season of “Welcome to Derry” using a similar scheme. The creators began developing it in early 2026, without waiting for HBO's decision, and the series only received an official renewal this week.
