Studio Ghibli has not yet decided on its next feature film and is in no hurry to launch a new project into production. Toho CEO Hiroyasu Matsuoka spoke about this in an interview with Bloomberg.
Toho distributes Ghibli films and is waiting for the studio to decide on its future plans. According to Matsuoka, potential projects are constantly being discussed, but it is almost impossible to know in advance which idea will actually turn into a new film:
"We discuss many projects at a very informal level. Sometimes one of them comes to fruition very quickly. Other times we say, 'Great idea, maybe we'll come back to it next time,' and it never happens. Everything is completely unpredictable."
Studio Ghibli's last feature film was "The Boy and the Heron," released in Japan in July 2023. Hayao Miyazaki's film won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but since then the studio has been silent about its next feature film.
Nevertheless, 85-year-old Hayao Miyazaki continues to actively work on new projects. In March 2026, producer Toshio Suzuki confirmed this, but the studio is not yet ready to say what the director is working on.
