The comedic mockumentary from the creators of "American Vandal" will explore Metropolis's judicial system.

HBO Max has ordered eight episodes of the series “The People v. Gorilla Grodd.” The project will be part of the revamped DC cinematic universe and will continue the story of Jimmy Olsen from James Gunn’s “Superman.”

The series will be filmed in the style of a true-crime documentary. Jimmy will take on one of Metropolis's most high-profile court cases and try to find out if Gorilla Grodd is truly guilty of murdering his own father.

Skyler Gisondo will return as Olsen, and Jimmy Tatro will play Grodd. Familiar Daily Planet staff members will include Steve Lombard played by Beck Bennett, Cat Grant played by Mikaela Hoover, and Perry White played by Wendell Pierce.

According to James Gunn and Peter Safran, the idea for the spin-off came from the Daily Planet actors and their interactions in “Superman”:

“Skyler’s performance and the wonderful chemistry among the Daily Planet staff showed us that this world is worth exploring.”
James Gunn

The showrunners are “American Vandal” creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, with Yacenda directing all eight episodes. The creators want to present the series as a real documentary project that the Daily Planet produced for the residents of Metropolis:

“We hope it will appeal to fans of comics, comedies, and true crime. We can't speak for viewers in our world yet, but we already know that in Metropolis, the series has been a huge hit. They love it there.”
Tony Yacenda

Production is handled by Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The start date for filming and the premiere date have not yet been announced.
