Owlcat talked about decisions and their consequences in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn - you can unlock skills and an alternative companion role

Recently, Owlcat Games once again reminded players about The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. This time, the studio did not limit itself to publishing concepts, but elaborated on the mechanics of decisions and their consequences.

Choosing a character's origin is just the beginning; it does not define the character's beliefs:

An Aster can support Earth, a Martian can go against Mars, and an Earther can fight for the Belt. Your origin only gives you a place in this world. How you use it depends on your decisions.

Previously, some players gained access to the beta version of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn and encountered one of the first dilemmas in the game at Pinkwater-4 station. When Protogen mercenaries followed the protagonist to the station, players could either convince the station staff to fight back or ask them to retreat while the player looked for another way out.

The developers explained that resistance would make the player's task easier, but then the station would be destroyed. Refusing to fight would allow the station and its personnel to avoid casualties:

Organized defense will provide you with valuable support during your escape, but it will also escalate the conflict. If you ask your colleagues to lay down their arms, your path to salvation will become much more difficult, but this can prevent a brewing conflict. And neither of these decisions ends when you leave Pinkwater-4.

Owlcat noted that later, players will be able to meet the families of the station staff and see how one decision affected their fate.

Choices within the team also have consequences. As an example, the developers considered the Aster teenager Polly. The player's influence on the heroine will gradually increase through conversations, reactions, and advice.

Depending on the mentor chosen by the players, Polly can gain new abilities, an alternative appearance, and a different role in missions:

At some point, you will have to choose a mentor for her from among the crew members. And this is not just a line in a dialogue. The mentor can determine the profession she chooses, unlock a unique branch of non-combat skills, change her role during missions, and even affect her appearance. Polly can become a cautious hacker, a skilled engineer, or dedicate herself to medicine. The mentor you choose will shape not only her abilities but also who she ultimately becomes.
