Analyst doesn't believe in EGS's competitive prospects against Steam - Epic Games disagreed

Epic Games Store has been trying to compete with Steam on PC for many years. Developers continue to gradually develop EGS: the service already has a shopping cart and other useful features, but the company has not yet managed to achieve Valve's service performance.

Recently, Newzoo analyst Emmanuel Rosier spoke about EGS's competition with Steam in an interview with PC Gamer. The specialist does not understand how Epic Games can change the current market situation:

“I don't quite understand how they're going to turn the tide, because Steam has become almost an inevitable choice. Epic Games Store attracts players with free games, but people just go in, pick them up, and don't even play them. You know, it's more like just collecting games.”

The analyst believes that Epic Games' main problem is that “for the past few years they have been trying to win everywhere” — there are not enough resources for everything:

“They are trying to beat Steam, and Apple, and Google Play. They are probably running out of steam, as it is impossible to fight all these battles at once.”

Epic Games reacted to the analyst's statements — they disputed his analysis. Martin Keely, Vice President and General Manager of Epic Games Store, pointed to EGS's high metrics and noted the service's prospects:

“The data tells a completely different story. In 2025, players spent a record 2.78 billion hours playing third-party games on the Epic Games Store, and player spending on third-party PC games grew by 57% to an all-time high of $400 million. With an improved launcher coming out this year, that momentum will only accelerate.”

The Newzoo analyst is more optimistic about Epic Games as a game developer, rather than an app store creator:

“They probably need to focus on what really matters. In my opinion, that's Fortnite. You can see that they are paying a lot of attention to Fortnite right now. They are doing everything they can, and judging by how Fortnite looks today compared to how it was six months to a year ago… I think it's paying off.”

The Epic Games Store team has big plans for this year: interface redesign, technical improvements, and more.
