This summer, Sony announced its refusal to release PlayStation games on discs. This decision angered some console owners, and they want to try to convince the management to bring discs back. To this end, they launched the "#PSBlackout" initiative.
Initially, the organizers planned the boycott as a temporary action with a clear timeframe: from August 23 to August 30. However, they recently faced a wave of criticism: players pointed out an obvious problem with this strategy — their idea could not be called a "boycott" in the usual sense, since a completion date had already been set for it.
An announcement with an updated strategy appeared on the Does it Play? account — one of the organizers of this boycott. Now they want to make this boycott indefinite. They plan to wait until Sony management admits its mistake:
We want physical copies of games to remain! A future where everything is digital, without ownership rights and consumer protection by law — is unacceptable! Go offline, don't play, don't buy anything, cancel subscriptions [PlayStation Plus] — until Sony realizes its mistake!
One of the popular comments under the boycott organizer's post: "Can we postpone it for a week? I like the Call of Duty beta." Does it Play? replied briefly: "No, that's the point."
Currently, access to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta has been granted to those who pre-ordered the game, and an open beta will start soon. Franchise games are very popular on PlayStation, so a boycott during the beta period makes some sense (if they can indeed convince shooter fans to join and ensure a noticeable drop in online activity).
