As eight people familiar with the discussions told POLITICO, Washington could significantly expand the list of goods subject to duties. This includes not only chips themselves but also products in which they are used, including laptops, gaming consoles, and data center servers.
One of the main proponents of the new approach is US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. According to sources, he advocates for a system where foreign companies' exemption from duties would directly depend on their investments in semiconductor manufacturing within the US. This way, the administration hopes to incentivize the relocation of production to the country.
However, the final structure of the tariffs has not yet been determined. The administration is also considering the possibility of gradually introducing new duties. Sources emphasize that the proposal could change significantly in the coming weeks and months.
