The American Film Association has given the new "Resident Evil" an R rating for "brutal bloody violence, graphic scenes, and pervasive strong language."
An R rating, meaning "adults only," is not new for the Resident Evil franchise: all previous feature films in the series received it. However, this time, the phrase "brutal bloody violence," used for the first time, drew attention. Previously, the films' content was described as "horror violence" or simply "strong violence." It is possible that the new adaptation will be even harsher than its predecessors.
The new "Resident Evil" will tell a standalone story based on Resident Evil. Brian is tasked with delivering a container with a donor organ to Raccoon City Hospital, but a routine trip quickly turns into a fight for survival. All events of the film will take place over one night, during which Brian will move through increasingly dangerous locations, find weapons, and encounter increasingly horrific versions of mutants.
The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. The premiere of the new "Resident Evil" will take place on September 18, 2026, in regular cinemas and IMAX.
