CDPR to release a "physical" edition of The Witcher 4 with nice extras, but it might not include a disc
The developers understand the importance of a "box" and want to please "The Witcher" fans.
This summer, Sony announced its abandonment of PlayStation game discs, and physical editions of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI will be supplied without discs – buyers will simply find a code in the box. Against this backdrop, "The Witcher" fans fear that The Witcher 4 will be released exclusively in digital format.
However, one of CD Projekt RED's co-CEOs, Michal Nowakowski, reassured them. Recently, in an interview with The Game Business, he clarified the company's position on the issue of "physical" editions:
We don't know how things will turn out. We heard PlayStation's announcement [about abandoning discs], and we have no influence over the policies of platform owners. Discs for internal studios, including PlayStation teams, must be produced in their own factories. So, if they really stop production by 2028, then yes [we won't have a disc].
Nowakowski noted that the developers are "geeks themselves" and like it when people have access to "tangible collectibles," so in any case, players will be able to get a "box" with nice extras. However, it's not certain that it will contain a The Witcher 4 disc:
Therefore, no matter how the situation unfolds, we will definitely have a "box" with nice extras inside. Something you'll want to open and enjoy. But we have no influence over how things will be [with the disc].
The Witcher 4 does not yet have a specific release date, but the release window is known – 2028.
