Sony abandoned discs for PS5 and PS6 due to GTA VI - insider
Sony is gradually moving away from physical game editions, and according to insider Moore's Law is Dead, one of the main factors behind this decision was the preparation for the enormous demand for GTA VI.
New details have emerged regarding Sony's controversial decision to transition to a digital model. According to informant Moore's Law is Dead, the scale of anticipated demand for the Rockstar Games hit has created serious logistical and financial problems for PlayStation.
According to leaks, Sony calculated the costs and concluded that producing tens of millions of discs for the new installment of the crime series would be unprofitable. Physical distribution takes several percent of revenue from each copy, and also requires expenses for disc production and packaging. Abandoning boxed versions will increase revenue from digital sales and save hundreds of millions of dollars on a release of this magnitude.
The decision may also affect the PS6. Sony allegedly abandoned expensive upgrades to production facilities in Austria for manufacturing next-generation discs, redirecting lines to more profitable optical component production.
The abandonment of physical media on PS5 forms the basis of Sony's fully digital strategy until the end of the decade.
