Sony may reconsider plans to abandon discs, but it's not due to a boycott or player backlash - rumor
This summer, Sony announced plans to abandon PlayStation game discs. The initial announcement suggested that the new policy would come into effect in January 2028, but the company may reconsider its plans.
The announcement caused a wave of outrage online: players in comments under posts and trailers actively urged PlayStation to bring back discs, and some this month announced a complete boycott — not playing on the console, not using Sony services, and canceling subscriptions. It is possible that Sony may adjust its policy — at least in terms of implementation deadlines, but the reason for such a decision (if it is indeed made) is not at all the players' reaction.
In the podcast “Eurogamer Nitro 1x01” (Eurogamer Spain), it was noted that “there is a growing feeling that the December 31, 2027 deadline may be pushed back by a year or two” — possibly due to Xbox's actions. It is assumed that Sony's management realized that they had left other market participants with the opportunity to change their strategy, and they could use the current situation to strengthen their positions.
Rumor has it that Microsoft is currently actively negotiating with publishers and convincing partners that its next console, Project Helix, will support discs and will allow for the conversion of physical game copies to digital:
