Valve allowed the release of a Portal remake, 15 years in the making, on Steam, but players cannot download it

News

The release of Portal: Alive & Kicking didn't go quite as planned, and not everyone who wanted to could experience the new title.

Developers Rhubarb & Rhubarb finally managed to release an unofficial remake of Portal on PC at the end of August. This long-awaited project is called Portal: Alive & Kicking, and its development took about 15 years.

Earlier this summer, the creators complained that they couldn't release it due to Valve — company representatives had stopped responding to messages. The authors modified the Portal 2 source code, so they didn't have the right to release their project even outside of Steam without Valve's approval:

We signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), but initially did not sign a non-commercial release form. We have now signed it, but have not yet received a response from them [Valve].

Now all issues have been resolved, and Portal: Alive & Kicking has been released on Steam, but there's still a problem: some players cannot download the mod directly through the store yet. The developers are aware of the issue and are currently trying to find a solution.

The Portal: Alive & Kicking page on Steam is available at the following link. If you can't download it through the store, there's a workaround — you need to go to the mod's page in the SteamDB database and click the "launch" button, after which a window for installing the project should open in the Steam client.

Portal: Alive & Kicking is a reinterpretation of the classic Portal with graphics and gameplay improvements, for example, hints and visual style have been refined, and various details have been added. In addition, the modders offer a new dynamic soundtrack.
