Greta Gerwig's "Narnia" Budget Reaches $280 Million, Says Film's Cinematographer

The amount may increase after project reshoots.

In May 2026, insiders reported that "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" could become the most expensive film in Netflix's history. It was assumed that the film's budget would exceed $320 million — the same amount as the Russo brothers' "The Electric State."

Now, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey has named a more specific figure. On the About Oscar podcast, he stated that the budget for "Narnia" is $280 million.

Netflix has not officially disclosed the production cost, but if McGarvey's words are true, "Narnia" will become Netflix's second most expensive film after "The Electric State." Following it are Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" with a budget of $225 million, as well as "Red Notice" and "The Gray Man," each costing $200 million.

However, in August, media reported that the film was sent for reshoots after unsuccessful test screenings. Therefore, the final cost of "Narnia" may increase after additional filming.

The film is based on C.S. Lewis's novel "The Magician's Nephew," which tells the story of the creation of Narnia and the first events in the history of the magical world. David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell play the main roles. The film also stars Emma Mackey, Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, and Meryl Streep. The music was composed by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously worked with Gerwig on "Barbie."

"Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" will be released in wide theatrical release on February 12, 2027, and will appear on Netflix on April 2, 49 days after its theatrical debut.
